| It's not often I rant on about someone else's tactics as I have always found my own to be sufficient. However, we have a chap in the frozen north, living in an Igloo on a frozen lake, who has made quite possibly the best tactic that I have ever used. He's not even English, obviously because its not a 4-4-2 formation or variation of one. Firstly, I have had great success with it. I have used it through most of my Rotherham game and now into my England game. You have seen my results there so you know I must be onto something. Secondly, its easily adaptable into just about any other formation with the players on the field if things are not going well in the game. He did the tactic for FM 11 but I have been using it for FM 12 with the same great results and feel the need to share it with everyone on his behalf. For me, I play attacking, fluid, but also make sure that your focus passing is through the middle and that you play narrow. This formation will tear up the EPL The only problem you will have is that there are not that many great DM's in England, so you will have to weigh your options carefully with the HG requirements. You may need 4 or 5 of the DM's in your squad depending on their stamina and strength. File is located here. http://www.mediafire.../?0qcbk97fnbc3v And once again, Thanks Writinguy for making FM more enjoyable for me these last few months:) |

| How this play developed: I had been reading about the classic W-M which had revolutionized football back in the 1920's, and thought that the back field configuration could have promise.
At the same time, I happened to be playing as Columbus using a narrow 4-3-1-2 formation, and since at that time I was pretty much wedded to that kind of setup, on paper, I moved the center CM back into the DM slot, along with moving a Central defender forward and voila, a blended formation was born.
And because much like the W-M, it looks like two letters, that's why I called it the M-X. |

| Using this for my San Marino game. Seems to be working a treat with the club, but I guess using 3 defenders against Holland was asking for trouble.
Lost 1-9!!
Mind you, I had 2 players sent-off. Although the 2nd red card came out after goal no. 8 |

| Wowzer, mind you 9 at the back and you'd probably still had the same outcome lol |

Mind you, I had 2 players sent-off. Although the 2nd red card came out after goal no. 8 It will take a few games to get going with it. Also, as its an excellent counter attack tactic, make sure you have one striker not closing down and staying in his own area. He will be the chappie when it gets hoofed back up the pitch. I started with it as balanced, but now have changed to fluid as the players are used to it. Focus passing is through the middle, as there are no wingers. Width narrow. Counter attack - Yes Offside Trap - Yes (Although against bigger clubs you may choose not to do this) Defensive Line - Normal Tackling - Default unless its a club that has some bruisers, then I play aggressive so as to entice the opposition into lots of fouls/yellows/reds. Creative Freedom/Roaming/Man Marking you will have to adjust based on the level of your players. I wouldn't try man marking Holland with San Marino, you may end up losing 9-1 !!! |

| haha! thanks. I'm thumping the goals in at club level, but of course international wise, we've only played 2 games (conceded 17 goals, though ) certainly makes for an enjoyable game. You may go down in FM legend, WG. |

I am still using this on my Brighstone save.
Currently in 2024 in League One and going strong. |

Glad you asked that, I have been using it for my Wycombe save and it does well. Shipping a lot of goals but amd scoring a lot more. I will do some tweaking and see if it can tighten up the defence some more before I try it in the big leagues. |
