Useless Facts About This Weekend's Fixtures - 3-5 December 2011

Newcastle v Chelsea

These two have met 60 times at St. James’s Park in the Premier League/First Division. Newcastle lead 30-15, and 91-65 in goals.

Chelsea are unbeaten in their last 4 trips to Newcastle, with the last time they lost back in May 2006 when a Titus Bramble goal separated the two sides. That win was the 4th successive meeting at this venue, between these two where Newcastle were unbeaten.

Newcastle’s biggest win was in November 1975 when they won 5-0. Chelsea’s best win here was in March 1961 when they won 6-1.

Blackburn v Swansea

This is the first time these two have ever met in the top flight. They’ve only ever met 33 times in their history.

The last meeting between these two was in March 1984 when Blackburn won 4-1 at Ewood Park in the old 2nd Division. Rovers have won 13 of the 16 all-time meetings at Ewood Park. Swansea have only won once, when they won 2-1 in September 1971

Manchester City v Norwich City

These two have met 17 times in the top division at City, and Norwich are yet to win. In 34 meetings at either venue, Norwich have only won twice. Their last 3 visits to City have resulted in just 1 defeat. City’s biggest win was in September 1977 when they won 4-0.

QPR v West Brom

There have been just 7 meetings between these two at Loftus Road in the top flight, and the last one was in April 1986, when QPR won 1-0.

West Brom has only won twice here, with the last time happening in August 1978 when they won 1-0. Surprisingly, despite QPR winning 4 of the 7 meetings, the goal tally is 8-8. This is mainly due to West Brom winning 4-0 on Boxing Day 1968.

Tottenham v Bolton

Tottenham are unbeaten in the past 6 meetings between these two at White Hart Lane. Bolton’s last win was in October 2004 when Henrik Pedersen score d the winner in a 2-1 victory.

That was the 2nd successive win for Bolton there, as they won 1-0 the previous November. During this run Tottenham have conceded just 3 goals Tottenham have been beaten just 9 times in the 41 meetings between the two in the top flight.

Wigan v Arsenal

Wigan have beaten Arsenal only once at home. That was in April 2004 when they came from 0-2 down to win 3-2 with all their goals coming in the last 10 minutes. Titus Bramble scored in that game as well.

Arsenal have failed to win in their last 2 visits to Wigan, although prior to that they conceded just 1 goal in their previous 3 trips, with a 4-1 win in April being the highlight.

Aston Villa v Manchester United

76 meetings between these two in the top division and Villa still have the advantage, with 30 wins to 25. Having said that, they’ve gone 15 games since their last victory. This came in August 1995 when goals from Ian Taylor, Mark Draper and a Dwight Yorke penalty saw them win 3-1. The United goal was from a chap called Beckham.

The run for Villa is just 1 win in their last 17 matches against United at Villa Park. Villa’s best win was a 7-0 victory in 1931, and then there was a 4-4 draw in 1955. United have yet to win there since 2007.

Everton v Stoke

Stoke have won just 1 of their last 19 visits to Goodison Park. They’ve failed to win in their last 7 visits, after they won 1-0 in April 1981. Everton has won 35 of the 53 meetings between these two at home, and have conceded just 3 goals in the last 7 meetings.

The last meeting saw Yakubu score the only goal in October 2010.

Wolves v Sunderland

Wolves have lost just once in the past 15 meetings between these two at Molineux going back to 1952. That solitary defeat was in January 1982 when Sunderland won 1-0.

The last meeting at Molineux was in November 2010 when Wolves won 3-2. Sunderland’s scorers that day were Darren Bent and Danny Welbeck. One could argue that if those two were still at the club, Sunderland would not be looking forward to the arrival of a new manager.

Fulham v Liverpool

19 times these two have met in the Premier League/First Division and Fulham has quite a good record with 7 wins and 7 defeats. The last meeting between these two at Craven Cottage saw Liverpool 3-0 up in the first 15 minutes, and ran out 5-2 winners.

Fulham have only scored more than 2 goals once, when they won 3-1 in October 2009. Zamora, Nevland and Dempsey scored for the home side, Torres was Liverpool’s scorer that day.

Liverpool have had some thumping wins at Craven Cottage although mostly in the League Cup, including a 10-0 and a 5-0 win.

I fancy Villa sneaking one over Utd today.

If Toon win then it has to be bye bye AVB.
